You are invited to audition for the 2017 GMEA District 12 High School Honor Symphony. Membership in this elite group is an extraordinary accomplishment. To be eligible to audition, you must be enrolled in a District 12 high school orchestra program or be an official homeschool student sponsored by a private teacher who is a GMEA member. If selected, you will perform with a group with the best musicians from all area high schools. The 2017 will be Paul Hostetter from Columbus State University. Students MUST be available for the all rehearsals. NO EXCEPTIONS! Please do not audition if you are not available for all of the rehearsals and concert. There are no alternates for the honor orchestra. If you are selected for Honor Orchestra and do not participate in the event, you are INELIGIBLE from participation in the group the next year. Please represent your school honorably.
Wind, Percussion, & Harp Auditions: Wind and percussion auditions will again be completed via YouTube auditions. The deadline for registration will be Friday, August 11, 2017 at 4:00PM, and the deadline for submitting the Wind, Percussion, & Harp audition is August 24, 2017 at 4:00PM. Wind, Percussion, & Harp Audition Requirements will be in two parts and will be for admission & seating.
1) 5 chromatically adjacent scales. More credit for more octaves. All-state rhythms and articulations.
2) Excerpts for Wind, Percussion,& Harp

String Auditions: Audition registration will be conducted online via this link: Honor Symphony Audition Request. The link will be open until Friday, August 11, 2017 at 4:00PM. Here is the audition schedule for 2017: District 12 Honor Symphony Audition TimesString Auditions will be from 4:00-9:30PM on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Walton High School. You will be assigned a time that will be e-mailed to you and your teacher. You must arrive and register 30 minutes ahead of time. Walton High School is at 1590 Bill Murdock Road; Marietta, GA 30062. Go to the main entrance of the school, look for the signs for Honor Symphony.
If you are a home school student in District 12 and wish to audition, please have your private teacher e-mail Sara Grimes to obtain an audition time.
The audition will be for admission and seating, and it will be two parts:
1) Scales: Violins: G Major/A melodic Minor-3 octaves. Violas/Cellos: C Major/D Melodic Minor-3 octaves. Bass: G Melodic Minor/F Major, 2 octaves. Scales must be memorized and will be asked to be played separate bows (QN = 60) or slurred two notes per bow (EN = 120). Arpeggios will be played separate bows (QN = 60). Do not stop between the scale and arpeggio.

If you are late for a rehearsal, you will be moved to the end of the section. Please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to rehearsal. If you miss a rehearsal or sectional, you will be dismissed from the event.

Strings-only piece to be announced at a later date.
Participation Fee: All selected participants of GMEA District 12 High School Honor Orchestra pay the participation fee of $35.00. There is not an audition fee. The participation fee will be collected by each individual director who will write one check to cover all students from the school.
Concert Attire: All participants will wear their FORMAL school uniform for the final concert. Men will be in their tuxedo, and ladies in the long black gowns. All uniforms must meet the Cobb County School District dress code – no short skirts, spaghetti straps, etc. Please make sure you are wearing black dress shoes and black stockings. No white socks or tennis shoes.
